Preface

The Department of English Language and Literature at North Western University (NWU), Khulna offers 4 programmes. These are 4 (four)-Year Undergraduate Programme, 1 (One) Year Graduate Programme in English Literature, 1 (one)-Year Graduate programme in English Language and 2 (Two) Year Graduate Programme in English Language and Literature. These programmes are spread over 2 (two) semesters. The common grading scale is followed as provided by University Grants Commission (UGC). This curriculum incorporates elements of emerging knowledge and learning of English studies keeping in view the curricula of the Department of English Language and Literature of the renowned public universities of the country and also a number of foreign universities. The structure and layout of this curriculum are designed in compliance with the guidelines of UGC and on the basis of Outcome Based Education (OBE). Dynamism has been introduced in the curriculum in order to ensure English education of international standard. The ultimate aim of the department is to impart to students up-to-date literary, theoretically critical insights, inquisitiveness in research and proficiency in English language and profound understanding of literature.

To enhance creativity of students, the department arranges various curricular activities like Seminars, Workshops, Literary and Linguistic Presentations, Text-based Movie Shows and Contests of Speech and Composition Writing. To make the students skillful, the department encourages extra-curricular activities like production of stage Drama, Recitation, Book reading competition, Study tour, Visits and Cultural programmes, Games and sports and Club activities etc.

The curriculum is based on the course credit system. There are Foundation, Elective and Core courses. Strong emphasis is given on the relevant basic courses which will help the students interact confidently with the people across the globe. This curriculum is subject to updating from time to time in order to keep pace with the modern trends of English studies.
