Department of English Language and Literature

Preface

The Department of English Language and Literature at North Western University (NWU), Khulna, offers three programmes: a four-year undergraduate programme, a one-year graduate programme in English Literature, and a one-year graduate programme in English Language Teaching (ELT). The undergraduate programme is conducted over eight semesters and each graduate programme is conducted over two semesters where each programme follows the grading scale prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The curriculum incorporates emerging trends and developments in English studies, taking into consideration the curricula of leading public universities in the country as well as several reputable foreign universities. Its structure and design comply with UGC guidelines and are developed in accordance with the principles of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The curriculum is designed to remain dynamic in order to ensure an international standard of English education. The ultimate aim of the department is to equip students with up-to-date literary and theoretical insights, foster critical thinking and research inquisitiveness, develop proficiency in the English language, and cultivate a profound understanding of literature.

To enhance students’ creativity, the department arranges various co-curricular activities such as seminars, workshops, literary and linguistic presentations, text-based film screenings, and competitions in speech and composition writing. To further develop students’ skills, the department also encourages extracurricular activities, including stage drama productions, recitation, book reading competitions, study tours, educational visits, cultural programmes, games and sports, and participation in club activities.

The curriculum is designed on a course credit system and comprises foundation, core, and elective courses. Strong emphasis is placed on fundamental and relevant courses to enable students to communicate confidently and effectively with people across the globe. The curriculum is periodically updated to keep pace with contemporary trends and developments in English studies.
